The Pagani Utopia is a rare, hand-built supercar, but even it has succumbed to a recall.
Pagani issued a recall for the V-12 supercar due to a manufacturing issue with the passenger-side dashboard panel, which may cause the airbag behind the panel to fail to deploy correctly in the event of a crash.
The panel is made from carbon fiber, and a defect in the mold results in additional composite material forming on the panel’s edge. This irregularity could damage the airbag during deployment, as discovered by Pagani while testing a new leather cover for the panel.
According to the recall notice published by the NHTSA on Nov. 25 (recall campaign number 24V891000), just eight Utopias are affected in the U.S.
The remedy involves dealers repairing the panel by applying dry Kevlar strips to all the edges to prevent the carbon fiber from contacting the airbag. This service will be performed free of charge.
Notification letters for owners of the affected vehicles are expected to be mailed starting Dec. 9. For further information, owners can contact Pagani at +39 059 4739201.
The Utopia began deliveries in the U.S. last year. The car is the successor to the Huayra and, like its predecessor, is powered exclusively by an 852-hp twin-turbocharged V-12 engine sourced from Mercedes-Benz AMG. Earlier this year, Pagani introduced an open-top option as well as the choice of a manual transmission alongside the standard sequential transmission.
